Sofia Colón is an education advocate and community leader.
As a parent and advocate for students and families, Sofia Colón is running for Stockton Unified School District Trustee Area 6 to ensure equitable education prepares our children for college and career.
Sofia Colón is a strong advocate for students and families.
Sofia Colón, born and raised in Stockton, is a wife and a mother. Sofia graduated from Penn State World Campus with a BS in Health Policy and Administration and a minor in Finance. Sofia is a Lead in the Professional Coding Support Services department at Kaiser Permanente, and co-led a process improvement project that increased quality in her department. She is the Founder and Co-Circle Leader of Latinas in Healthcare, a Lean In Circle, aiming to increase Latina representation in healthcare leadership. Lean In is an international organization that brings women together for peer-to-peer mentorship and advocacy for gender and pay equity.
In her Stockton community, Sofia is a strong advocate for students and families. She serves on the Stockton Scholars Advisory Board, providing city-wide college scholarships for high school seniors. As a member of the South Stockton Schools Initiative, she learned how to analyze educational policies and successfully articulate recommendations to the school board. Sofia was also a proud member of the Steering Committee for Strong Communities, a City of Stockton committee formed through a voter-approved special tax dedicated to Stockton recreation and library programs, services and facilities.
Sofia is running for Stockton Unified School District Trustee for Area 6 to hold our school district accountable to the community’s values and priorities. As Trustee, Sofia intends to prioritize our students, ensure fiscal responsibility, and engage our community in the fight for our student’s success.
Literacy is the foundation for all student achievement. Currently, only 26% of our SUSD 3rd graders meet or exceed the California English and literacy standards. This is unacceptable! As Trustee, I intend to call attention to this critical standard and seek sustainable solutions our students deserve.
Accountability is one of the core responsibilities as a Trustee. This includes fiscal accountability. As Trustee, I intend to hold our district responsible to the recommendations and requirements outlined in the recent Financial Crisis & Management Assistant Team’s (FCMAT) Fiscal and Facilities Review and the San Joaquin County Grand Jury Reports.
Community engagement is critical if Trustees are to represent the community’s values and priorities. As Trustee, I will hold regular office hours and listening sessions. However, I believe we can do more for our students and their families to feel seen, heard, and supported.
