Reviving Fair Oaks Library: How Sofia Colón Advocated for Community Resources

After the Fair Oaks Branch Library in Stockton, California, was closed for several years due to the city’s financial challenges, community advocate Sofia Colón emerged as a key figure in the campaign to reopen it. Her dedication and efforts were instrumental in the library’s revival, which culminated in its reopening on May 15, 2017.

In 2010, the Fair Oaks Library was closed amid Stockton’s financial crisis. This closure left many residents without access to essential library services. Recognizing the profound impact this had on the community, Colón began advocating for the library’s reopening in early 2014. Through her persistent efforts, Colón not only raised awareness about the importance of the library but also contributed to the development of a guide to empower others in community advocacy. Her work exemplifies the power of grassroots activism in revitalizing community resources.

Today, the Fair Oaks Branch Library offers a variety of materials for all ages, including fiction and non-fiction books, graphic novels, DVDs, and CDs in both English and Spanish. It also provides public internet access, learning games on iPads, and comfortable seating areas for visitors.
